In Chinese medicine, many meridians have associated spirits. Shen are the spirits of the heart. The name is used for The Haven's journal to reflect our belief that people are connected through the resonance of the heart.

NewBJ

Welcome to the first full online issue of Shen. After many years of publishing Shen in print format The Haven is now making its journal an online publication. In this way we are able to save on financial and environmental costs, reach a wider audience, and offer a more varied mix of material, including both audio and video recordings.

The Haven is celebrating its 25th year in 2008 and the anniversary is the focus of this Shen. The year began with a celebration on January 1 to honour The Haven’s founders, Bennet Wong and Jock McKeen.

The newly named Wong and McKeen Phoenix Auditorium was packed for this event, which followed on an extremely successful Reflections attended by more than 70 participants. Click here for a slideshow of photographs, most from Reflections but with some from the celebration too.

You can also listen to an interview with Ben and Jock, in which they talk about buying The Haven property in 1983 and the excitement of their first days on Gabriola.

We also have several articles for you to read. Our Executive Director, John Shields, looks at The Haven’s past, present and future, describing this year as a “moment of passage”. Maria Gomori recalls her early meetings with Ben and Jock and the time she spent at The Haven with Virginia Satir. “At The Haven,” she says, “it is safe to be human. What greater gift can be contributed?”

There is also a piece on the power of groups by Gwen Ewan and an article by Ellery Littleton, for which he has written this introduction:

The Healing Resort

I wrote this article 22 years ago. Although much has changed at the Haven since then, the essential experience of being there, as I tried to describe it in the article, remains intact.

The intimate atmosphere and sense of family created by Bennet Wong and Jock McKeen, supported and sustained by their core group of faculty and staff, has survived at the Haven, through the current period of evolution and self-evaluation. I have been to the Haven over 100 times since it opened, to attend workshops, to lead workshops, to have a holiday, and I always love to go back. I’m sure this wouldn’t be the case for me, and for so many others, if it didn’t feel like home. May it always be so.
